Let’s start with the question, what is suffer? At its essence, suffering is resistance; resistance to memories of the past, fears about the future, or discomfort in the present moment. This resistance triggers emotional pain and physical tension.
The truth is simple: when you fully return to the here and now, you will often notice that nothing threatening is actually happening. Unless you are in real danger (in which case, act immediately to protect yourself), suffering is rarely about the present, it comes from the mind’s imagination.
If the present moment is safe, yet distress is felt, then suffering must be a misperception of reality.
The Body as a Control Center
The body and mind both contribute to suffering. Importantly, the body cannot distinguish between a real threat and an imagined one—its reaction is the same: tension, stress, and emotional overwhelm.
Think of the body as a factory control center. Its signals—tension, feelings, emotional waves—are indicator lights. They don’t mean you’re in danger now, but they do reveal when the mind is creating an imaginary world of threat.
By returning to the present moment, you use it as a safety anchor. This allows the body to realign with reality and begin its natural healing process.
Allowing the Unwinding Process
Instead of resisting distress, the invitation is to allow it to unwind. Here’s how:
- Recognize your body feels tense, stress, maybe panic
- Investigate the story the mind is telling (the mental equivalent of the physical distress).
- Feel the body fully, while reminding yourself: I am safe right now and I am watching what happens.
- Give space to the emotions, without judgment or suppression.
- Lovingly allow, investigate, and surrender.
This process is like releasing old momentum and adding peace and safety to the story. Past experiences have created habits of tension, but by allowing them to unwind in a peaceful situation, they lose their tight association to danger and threat and eventually dissolve.
If it feels overwhelming, ask yourself: Am I safe right now? Let that acknowledgment sink into the body. This helps the nervous system relax.
Tip: If trauma feels too heavy, seek professional guidance. Without support, there’s a risk of retraumatization. With guidance, the unwinding becomes a powerful healing journey. At Mushroom Awakening, we guide you through this important process, rewiring the system.
Why We Resist What Already Is
Encouragement and support during this process is very helpful. Humans have the strange tendency to resist what is happening in the moment, including what is happening in the body and mind. We resist emotions, memories, or circumstances that come up and are currently not convenient, are threatening or could possibly make you loose control.
Most of these emotions are triggered by stories of the past. Yet. it happened as it did, and insisting they should have been different only prolongs suffering. Every event unfolded from countless circumstances, and in that sense, it could not have been otherwise. A full cocktail of influences lead to the situation and the actions that have happened. There was no other way it could have played out. If it would have been able to play out differently, it means there was another cocktail of influences at play… yet, there wasn’t…
Radical Forgiveness and Letting Go
This deep recognition of inevitability leads to the invitation of radical forgiveness. By understanding that things could not have unfolded differently, we open the door to forgiving others and ourselves.
Without forgiveness, resistance hardens into suffering, mental stress and physical tension. With forgiveness, energy begins to flow again.
Letting go means surrendering fear, grief, anger, guilt, and shame. The body unwinds, the burden lightens, and peace re-enters your system.
The Value of Peace of Mind
Peace of mind is one of the greatest forms of wealth. When the body-mind system is at ease, everything functions better: relationships, health, work, and creativity. This is why prioritizing mindfulness, self-care, and supportive guidance is so important.
Conclusion: Practicing Unwinding in Daily Life
Everything that has happened, has happened. Everything that is, is. The past cannot be changed, and the present is already here. Your power lies in how you respond in this moment, shaping the future wisely.
The way forward is to practice unwinding:
- Acknowledge that you are safe here and now
- Allow the body to release old tension and emotions while staying conscious of the safety and peace that is here
- Witness the process, be curious about the origin of the tension and how the mind is misperceiving and misrepresenting reality
- Surrender resistance and let peace return.
Suffering is optional, but flowing with life is always possible. By letting go of resistance and giving your body-mind space to unwind, you create room for clarity, freedom, and peace. And from that state of presence, you are free to dance with what life brings and create the future of your dreams.
